Our History
While on a trip to Mexico in 1973, Bill Wilson, a McAllen businessman and avid music lover listened to bands performing in the town plazas. He envisioned a similar group performing in McAllen's Archer Park, and upon returning to McAllen, he began to talk to other businessmen, band directors, and members of the community who shared his love for music. Musicians were recruited and selected Paul Garrett to conduct the Band. With the help of financial backers, the band was able to purchase some instruments.

In November 1973, the Town Band had its first rehearsal in the McAllen High School Band Hall. A small number of band directors, students and local businessmen faithfully prepared for the first concert which was held in Archer Park on March 31, 1974. Later that year the Band had its first 4th of July Concert, which has remained a tradition ever since, and in December had its first ever Christmas Concert.

That same year, the Town Band was chartered as a non-profit organization by the City of McAllen, who has continued their support with the help of the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department.

In 1997, the Town Band Association changed the name of the Town Band to the McAllen Symphonic Band. Along with the Symphonic Band's 65 members, the Town Band Association has also formed a Stage Band and other ensemble groups to help entertain our audiences and to better meet the cultural needs of our community.

Over the years, the Town Band has performed for audiences in a variety of festivals and concerts throughout the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico.

This year the Town Band Association is proud to celebrate its 29th year of service to the community by providing an outlet for local professional and amateur musicians to perform.
